According to reports, the Blue Jays are interested in two rumored free agent targets from the Mets.
As several Major League Baseball teams are targeting middle-of-the-line support, the Toronto Blue Jays appear to be putting up a strong fight for the Mets’ probable free-agent targets.
Shohei Ohtani, a two-way superstar, was connected to Toronto but was not selected to fill the role of designated hitter for the team. The Blue Jays are currently associated with a number of other elite players, including two suspected targets from the New York Mets.
Sluggers Justin Turner and J.D. Martinez are apparently targets of the Blue Jays, per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.
“So far this off-season, the Toronto front office has shown some interest in a wide range of DH candidates, including (Joc Pederson), Rhys Hoskins, J.D. Martinez, Joey Votto, Justin Turner, and others,” Nicholson-Smith stated. “And since the Blue Jays would benefit from multiple hitters, a deal with Pederson wouldn’t necessarily rule out adding a second bat-first player, like Turner, for instance.”
This offseason, Martinez and Turner have been connected to New York on several occasions. The designated hitter position has to be improved by the Mets. This summer, New York released slugger Daniel Vogelbach and is now trying to find a replacement.
Turner and Martinez would both be ideal additions to the Mets. They both had successful seasons in 2023 and probably won’t cost too much. It wouldn’t be too shocking to see Martinez and Turner land in New York, given the city has been floated as a potential landing location. It’s obvious that the Blue Jays will be vying for either slugger, and the Mets will face competition.
