Fijian Drua train on uncharted territory
Shipped Swire-Style This week, Fijian Drua players took their first steps onto their new training field. The squad now has a training ground in their backyard, so they won’t have to drive forty or fifty minutes for training sessions.
CEO Mark Evans stated, “This week we went on the training field for the first time.” In order to level the field and encourage grass growth for the team’s use, the ground crew faced many obstacles. Sadly, the dry season that hit the Western Division in the latter part of last year destroyed their aspirations.
Evans stated that the extreme dryness that pervaded November and December made it extremely challenging for the ground crew to obtain the necessary growth for a satisfactory service.
“The largest task at first was leveling the base; after that, we planned to finish by late November. The leveling proceeded as planned, but at that point, even though we irrigated the grass with water tanks, rain is necessary for it to grow, and it didn’t happen.”
Evans expressed delight with the drainage system, which is now worry-free due to recent significant rains in the Western Division. This year brought about a positive improvement with enough rainfall.
“With the amount of rain we’ve gotten over the past three weeks, the drainage is excellent. No surface water was present, and there was no pooling. It’s flat, and they did an excellent job. “We have full-time staff and a full-time maintenance program.”
The Drua base was refurbished, the medical section was expanded, and the social area was doubled in size. Other changes made to the base included remodeling the conference and office spaces.
“Every year is all we can do to improve things; we can’t do it all at once.”
