Quinn is hired by Commanders; Washington gets a bad grade?
Quinn’s arrival in Washington has received a poor rating from CBS Sports, so not everyone is thrilled about the move.
Ron Rivera was fired by Washington after four difficult but ultimately unremarkable seasons, but it’s odd to go from one aging defensively minded retread to another given how progressive the team seemed to be, welcoming new front-office leadership and ownership, according to CBS Sports.
“There is little doubt that Quinn oversaw an opportunistic “D” with the Cowboys, and he has already made it to the top, leading the Falcons to the Super Bowl in 2016. After that, he only finished 18โ23 and received no invitation to the playoffs. This hardly strikes me as an inspiring or creative choice, though maybe his experience can help ground a rebuilding team.”
Though there is no issue with Washington hiring a “old school” coach, there is a perception that the team has chosen to follow the path taken by other teams over the past 12 months, hiring coaches from the so-called “new wave” such as DeMeco Ryans, Mike Macdonald, Antonio Pierce, Jerod Mayo, Brian Callahan, Raheem Morris, and Dave Canales.
In a game that Atlanta should have won, Quinn led them to the Super Bowl and quickly turned around the horrifying Cowboys defense. Quinn isn’t one of the new, showy head coach hires, but that doesn’t make him a bad pick either.
Quinn’s ability to establish a positive, robust culture as Washington moves into a period of transition may have played a significant role in the commanders’ decision to choose him.
