Report: Steelers wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson is out.
There will only be one offensive assistant position available because he is the first assistant to leave after Arthur Smith was hired as the next offensive assistant. The only offensive assistant to depart thus far was Glenn Thomas, although Jackson has already created a vacancy.
Jackson, 44, was the receivers coach for the Tennessee Titans in 2017 after playing for the Carolina Panthers for two seasons. Jackson coached players including Robby Anderson, D.J. Moore, and Curtis Samuel while he was a member of the Panthers. However, Jackson’s departure from the Steelers was probably influenced by other circumstances outside the group, even though George Pickens and others showed improvement.
He coached receivers at the collegiate level for the following teams: North Illinois (2012), Akron (2010–11), Baylor (2018–19), Temple (2015–16), NC State (2013–14), and Western Illinois (2008–09). Jackson spent two seasons at NC State working with running backs coach Eddie Faulkner and for Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
Jackson, a native of Chicago, attended North Illinois from 1997 to 1999 as a quarterback while Canada worked as the running backs coach. After moving to Western Illinois, he switched positions and played wide receiver his final year of 2000, setting school records for receptions and yards in a single game.
After signing with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2002, he played in the NFL for six seasons, five of which were spent there. His career total was 40 receptions for 490 yards and one score.
Pittsburgh is about to start their search for a new wide receiving coach. Former wide receiver Hines Ward of the Steelers, who resigned as head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas and hasn’t found a new position, is the logical choice. However, Smith intends to interview prospects from all around the league in order to find a top-notch coach who can further the room’s development.
