The Buffalo Bills hire new QB and CB coaches after mutually agreeing to part ways with the DB coaches.
He directed plays for the defense during Buffalo’s preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but linebackers coach Bobby Babich who was the assistant safety coach in 2018 passed him up for the position of defensive coordinator. Babich’s father, Bob Babich, resigned after the 2021 season, and he was later elevated to safety coach.
Babich subsequently assumed control of the linebackers’ room. The 39-year-old Jahmile Addae takes Butler’s place. On Wednesday, the Bills hired the former Miami Hurricanes secondary coach to serve as their new coach of cornerbacks. Addae has spent the previous two seasons as the defensive backs coach at Georgia, having taken over the role in 2021.
The Bills also selected former New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Ronald Curry as their new quarterbacks coach. Before coming to the Saints in 2016, Curry worked as an assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers. The Los Angeles Raiders selected him in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft after he attended North Carolina to play basketball and football.
He finished his playing career with 13 receiving touchdowns with the Raiders after transferring from quarterback to wide receiver in college. He was the wide receivers coach at New Orleans as well. The former Florida player chosen by the Bills in the first round of the 2022 draft, Kaiir Elam, and Butler have never seemed to get along since joining the league.
Elam voiced his dissatisfaction with a lackluster second season at the locker room cleanout in January, following the Bills’ divisional-round playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Elam stated that although he had an excellent offseason, he was only able to participate in three regular season games (two starts) and lost the competition for the starting number-two cornerback position.
“No comment,” was Elam’s response when asked how much he looked up to the now-former DBs coach, Butler. He continued, “In terms of my team’s health, I wasn’t there.” Really, I was unable to flee or blow up. That gave the individual who decided not to play me more power.
I just think that I was able to demonstrate that I could play well or take the ball away at a high level when I was well enough to do so. I’m going to keep pushing myself and working hard to improve. I’m limited to doing that. In addition, Christian Taylor was hired by the Bills to serve as a defensive quality control coach.
