Mike Zimmer will join the Cowboys as a DC, according to several reports.
Although the specifics of the agreement are still unknown, Zimmer was selected following interviews with Ron Rivera, Rex Ryan, and himself.
Zimmer, why?
Zimmer has a lengthy history in this league. He has a strong defensive mindset, a remarkable record of game victories, and excellent coaching experience. From 2014 to 2017, he served as the Vikings’ head coach. going 72-56-1 and guiding them to three postseason appearances.
However, he began his coaching career in Dallas. He joined the Cowboys in 1994 as an assistant and served as the defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2006. Zimmer is a fan of football. He is there to be your coach, not to be your friend.
So perhaps not, but I approve of the hire. He constantly maximizes the strengths of the linebacker and secondary players and puts them in positions to excel. Zimmer seemed like the most suitable candidate for the field they interviewed, especially when Quinn brought Joe Whitt Jr. to Washington to serve as his defensive coordinator.
Defense Type
It’s well known that Zimmer runs aggressive, adaptable 4-3 defenses that make teams think hard before and after the snap. They might stick with it, in my opinion, or Zimmer might consult with Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, and the other important defenders to find out their preferences.
His teams have consistently played defense that is far above average because of his excellent defensive mind. When he was the head coach of the Vikings, they gave up just 21 points a game.
The Cowboys have been attempting to stop the run for the past two years, and Zimmer will position guys to assist in doing so. Since Mike McCarthy assumed the position of head coach, Zimmer has served as the defensive coordinator three times.
When he was originally hired, he brought in Mike Nolan, and that is when it all began. Without a doubt, Nolan’s defense was the worst I have ever seen. When he called the plays, the Cowboys surrendered a franchise-high 473 points.
Quinn was excellent for roughly a year and a half. They struggled against good teams, even though they led the league in takeaways, and he was the catalyst for them. Teams sprinting downhill destroyed them physically.
2024 Defense
The Cowboys need assistance at linebacker and defensive line, but they have talent on that side of the ball. We believe Zimmer should assist them in improving their ability to stop the run. Although I dislike speculating about a coach’s actions before they are demonstrated on game day, Zimmer is a wise choice.
In terms of cap space, the Cowboys are not in a terrific position, but they can beat the cap by adding players if they so desire. If this is the appropriate hire, only time will tell. It is imperative that these guys begin to commit to a system; perhaps Zimmer can facilitate that.
