The 49 Super Bowls featuring at least one football player from USC
The only Super Bowl trophy won by a Trojan this decade went to Ronald Jones of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who took home the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl LV. Players from USC have participated in 49 of the 57 Super Bowls overall.
The Men of Troy have rostered at least one player for the NFL’s final showcase a very high percentage of the time. The Super Bowl’s history and retrospectives from previous decades seem paltry in contrast as the game approaches 60 contests. The Official Encyclopedia of Pro Football, a large, tall, black book with enormous photo spreads of the first 16 Super Bowls, is something I can still remember my mother getting me.
When I was little, the history of the Super Bowl wasn’t that long. As of right now, though, 57 games have been completed, and the 58th will take place in Las Vegas on February 11.
When it comes to players’ all-time Super Bowl appearances, USC is ranked third among programs. This is the overall number of appearances made by a player, not the total number of appearances made by a player.
To put it another way, this includes a player’s multiple or comeback appearances. After their initial trip to the Super Bowl, Lynn Swann, Ronnie Lott, Ron Yary, Anthony Munoz, and numerous other Trojans made it back.)
114 Trojans have been in Super Bowls overall, according to the USC sports information department, following Super Bowl LIII between the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots in 2019. In Super Bowl LV, Ronald Jones estimated that figure to be 115, however other sources reported a larger figure.
To put this into perspective, an assessment conducted in 2014 estimated that USC had made 111 appearances overall. Since Super Bowl XLVIII (Seahawks vs. Broncos) in February 2014, when that review was released, USC has made 121 appearances in total. Ronald Jones’ appearance brought that total to 121. Ronald Jones and JuJu Smith-Schuster were both listed as active for the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII.
In Super Bowl LVI, Robert Woods of the Los Angeles Rams won a Super Bowl ring, but he was sidelined by an injury during the game. You get the picture: There may be disagreements on the official rostered player count.
Rob Hertel, a former quarterback for USC, has an NFL player page, however he is not listed on the Pro Football Reference page for the Philadelphia Eagles, the 1980 NFC champions who faced the Oakland Raiders in January 1981 in Super Bowl XV. That explains why some final tallies and others don’t add up.
That is something to be mindful of, just to be clear. Enjoy this compilation of all 49 Super Bowls in which a University of Southern California player appeared as a member of a squad.
