Chicago Cubs Sign Free Agent Outfielder; Dodgers Lose Him
Peralta, 36, was the Dodgers’ starting left fielder against right-handed pitching in 2023 despite having a rough start to the season. In 133 games, he finished with a.259 average. In addition to driving in 55 runs and hitting seven home runs, he reached base at a.294 clip.
It was unexpected that the Dodgers would recall Peralta, particularly after they signed free agent Teoscar Hernández as an outfielder. Peralta’s exit became official on Monday.
There are several stories stating that Peralta and the Chicago Cubs have an agreement. FanSided’s Robert Murray broke the initial news of the pact.
Though Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports that the deal is a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the financial details of the agreement have not yet been made public.
Offering a left-handed hitting complement to right-handed hitter Chris Taylor, the seasoned outfielder made $6.5 million in Los Angeles in 2023. The majority of the Dodgers’ investment was recovered by Peralta’s glove. Out of all major league outfielders last season, his eight defensive runs saved placed him in 14th place. Peralta was a left field Gold Glove Award finalist.
This kind of throw, with Peralta in the corner, frequently stopped runners from advancing to the extra base:
Peralta did establish himself at Dodger Stadium by hitting a walk-off single on Jackie Robinson Day, which happened to be against the Chicago Cubs, despite his lackluster offensive performance:
Peralta will now bring his skills to Wrigley Field’s Friendly Confines. Since Cody Bellinger is still a free agent, the Cubs are noticeably without a vital component of their 2023 outfield. While Peralta couldn’t replace Bellinger’s offensive output, he can ideally give an up-and-coming squad hoping to make the playoffs leadership and a solid glove.
With three different organizations (the Diamondbacks, Rays, and Dodgers) during ten major league seasons, Peralta has amassed 117 home runs, 541 RBIs, and a.279 batting average.
