T.J. Watt of the Steelers wants clarification on the DPOY Award
Although Watt was ahead of Myles Garrett in every but one category and led the league in sacks for three straight seasons, he came in second in the voting. He is now requesting an explanation.
Watt explained that he is only requesting a clearer explanation of the award’s meaning and how to win it in an interview with Pardon My Take.
“I don’t have a problem with any of the players,” Watt commented. Don’t get me wrong, Micah and Myles are excellent players, but everyone is terrific. I would prefer additional clarification regarding the overall process, as it is merely voting.
You put in so much work, and you like to cling to anything that proves your efforts were worthwhile when a season ends without winning the Super Bowl. Even though it stings to not get that, it ultimately provides greater motivation. That is indeed a legacy issue. Although it goes along with playing, it is not the reason.”
After the sack was added to the official stats in 1980, Watt became the first player in NFL history to lead the league in sacks three times. With four forced fumbles each, the only official stat on which he did not score more than Garrett was this one.
Garrett was double-teamed more often during the season, though, and he had greater pass rush wins and pressure rates. He captured the hearts of the people as a result, and he was declared the winner.Fans of the Steelers should be very excited for Watt’s attempt to earn another DPOY award next season, as he stated during the ceremony that he is using the rejection as fuel.
“Yeah, I think that’s up for everybody to kind of debate,” said Watt. I wanted to inform people of my absence if they were seeing it. It was just one of those situations. Furthermore, I’m using it as motivation moving ahead because it was a scenario that I’m actually accustomed to at this time.”
