The fatal city fire has caused Valencia’s La Liga match against Granada to be postponed.
A catastrophic fire in the city has caused Valencia’s La Liga match versus Granada to be postponed.
In the Spanish city, a fire on Thursday destroyed two apartment buildings, leaving at least ten dead and up to fifteen missing.
Valencia, who sit eighth in La Liga, had been slated to host Granada at the Mestalla Stadium on Saturday.
The team declares itself “devastated” and says they “offer our help to emergency services for any need they may have”.
The club will fly flags at half-mast at its facilities, while the men’s, women’s, and academy squads observed a minute of silence before their training sessions on Friday morning.
Around 17:30 local time (16:30 GMT), firefighters were dispatched to the scene, and emergency personnel used cranes to lift multiple occupants off their balconies.
The fire, which was exacerbated by strong gusts, was fought by more than 20 fire units.
The fire injured fifteen individuals, including six firefighters and a small infant, but no one’s life is in danger.
Dismayed by the terrible fire in a building in Valencia… I want to convey my solidarity to all the people affected and recognition to all the emergency personnel already deployed at the scene,” wrote Pedro Sanchez, the prime minister of Spain, in a post on X, the former Twitter.
According to experts, the building’s extremely combustible cladding contributed to the fire’s quick spread.
The Valencian region has proclaimed a three-day period of mourning.
