Deep rifts in the Ukraine war were evident in Central European countries during the V4 meeting.
At a conference in Prague on Tuesday, the prime ministers of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia expressed agreement that Kyiv needs assistance and that Russia’s assault against Ukraine is a blatant breach of international law.
On the reasons behind Russia’s aggressiveness and the kinds of help they are willing to provide to Ukraine, the V4 nations disagree.
Hungary and Slovakia hold radically different opinions, but the Czech Republic and Poland are unified in their steadfast support for Ukraine, including the transfer of weapons.
The meeting was arranged in Prague by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, who declared, “I think I can say there are differences among us.”
Fiala declared, “I won’t keep it secret; it wouldn’t make sense that we have different opinions about what caused Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and how to fix it.”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared, “Russian President Vladimir Putin is a war criminal; the only cause of the conflict in Ukraine is Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.” He went on, “The political, moral, and historical assessment of what is happening in Ukraine today must be unequivocal, regardless of how strong a country Russia remains to be.”
Hungary and Slovakia have declined to provide Ukraine with weapons and ammunition. The Western strategy for the conflict, according to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, is “an absolute failure.”
“A military solution to the conflict in Ukraine is something I don’t believe in,” Fico said. He also said that the EU needed to come up with a wartime peace plan.
The leftist populist Fico has previously echoed Russia’s version of events leading up to the war in Ukraine, including Putin’s unsubstantiated assertion that the present Ukrainian government is running a Nazi state against which the ethnic Russian population in the east of the country needs to be protected.
He also wants to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO and is against EU sanctions against Russia. He asserted that arming Ukraine with Western weaponry would not alter the trajectory of the conflict.
The nationalist conservative populist prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, stated that “the war could end only through negotiations.” The peace negotiations should start “the sooner, the better,” he continued.
