A Newcastle team that won ten games in a row to get to the semi-finals of the previous season will face Strange and seasoned Jamal Fogarty in their first matchup since Jack Wighton’s departure.Even though there has been buzz in the off-season about a youthful, new-look Canberra team, coach Stuart believes that the Raiders’ experienced forward group will help second-gamer Strange.
“But Ethan is not lacking any confidence, he’s a very mature young man and a very, very talented footballer.”Like any other young boy, Ethan needs to play 40 or 50 games before you can expect the best from him for a number of them.”Although I can assure you that there is a great deal of belief, I am not putting any pressure on Ethan or any of our younger players.”
With Jack Cogger and Kai Pearce-Paul coming off the bench, Enari Tuala replaces Dominic Young, who is headed to the Sydney Roosters, in the Knights starting lineup. In addition to English lock Morgan Smithies and former Penrith second-rower Zac Hosking, the Raiders have recalled teenage gun Xavier Savage on a wing after he appeared in just one game in the previous campaign.
The Raiders are playing back home, where they lost the elimination final the previous year despite rallying from an undermanned Canberra team that gave the Knights almost their best game of the year before succumbing in overtime.
“We basically built our off-season off that game, it was a wonderful game of courage,” Stuart commented.Several players were sidelined due to injuries or suspensions, and we experienced several unlucky circumstances during the game when the flow of the game didn’t go our way despite our bravery.
“It’s going to be a tough grind up there, it’s going to be very, very physical, not dour but an intense game, especially to start with a packed house, and with the excitement the Newcastle Knights have got at the moment in regards to their season last year, they’re bouncing off a very successful season.”
