Just in: Greg Newsome will take Cameron Sutton’s place.
Thus far in his career, Newsome has experienced both periods of excellent play and periods of inconsistent play. He exudes a swagger and confidence in himself that he doesn’t always reliably replicate on the field. But that’s the nature of cornerback play; it’s all about playing fearlessly and with a short memory. With Carlton Davis and Amik Robertson, the Lions have added some confidence to their cornerback position. However, if a cornerback can support their swagger with their play, there’s never too much of it in the room.
In each of his three NFL seasons, Newsome has permitted a quarterback rating lower than 86.0. In the past two seasons, he has played both outside and in the slot and has seen a substantial amount of action as a box player. Although he had a few missed tackles in the previous campaign, he was a willing contributor against the run, recording 14 pass breakups.
Naturally, before the Lions traded for Davis, Risdon offered them the No. 73 choice in the current draft as well as a 2025 fourth-round selection in exchange for Newsome.
Given that they traded their other third-round pick for Davis this year, dealing No. 73 tilts to extremely doubtful at this point. However, if the Browns were to accept picks following this season, say in 2025 and 2026, in accordance with Risdon’s suggestion, the acquisition of Newsome by Detroit might be finalized.
