Lloyd played a major part in both of Forest’s European Cup victories. The center defender also won the league and the Uefa Cup at Anfield.
The double European Cup champion Larry Lloyd, who passed away at the age of 75, was honored by Nottingham Forest.
Lloyd was an important member of the Forest team that won the league in 1978 and the European Cup in 1979 and 1980 under Brian Clough. Lloyd also won the First Division title and the Uefa Cup with Liverpool. The defender, who was born in Bristol, also earned four caps for England. After his incredibly successful playing career ended, he managed Wigan and Notts County.
“We have learned of Larry Lloyd’s passing and are deeply saddened,” a statement from Forest said. Larry, who made 218 appearances for the team overall, was a crucial member of the Miracle Men and was a key member of the Forest team that famously won back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980. We are sincerely sorry for the loss and offer our condolences to Larry’s friends and family. Peace be with you, Larry
During his news conference to promote the match against Crystal Palace, Forest manager Nuno Espírito Santo stated, “I’ve been told he was one of the miracle men.” We send our condolences to his family. It’s a depressing time. It’s quite difficult to win two European competitions in a succession, which is why we’re so happy of him and feel honoured for him. Its history is enormous.”
Lloyd started his career at Bristol Rovers and was later signed for £50,000 in 1969 by Liverpool manager Bill Shankly. Lloyd played every game for Liverpool as they won both the league and the Uefa Cup during 1973.
Liverpool sent a statement in memory of Lloyd that read, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former defender Larry Lloyd, age 75.” Everyone at the club is thinking of Larry’s friends and family.
Following two years at Coventry, Lloyd signed a £60,000 contract to move to the City Ground, where he partnered with Kenny Burns to create a crucial center-back duo that helped Forest defeat Malmö in the 1979 European Cup final.
