In the tenth inning, Julio Rodriguez produces a walk-off RBI single, helping the Mariners defeat the Red Sox 4-3.
In the top of the 10th inning, Pablo Reyes and Masataka Yoshida singled in two runs each to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead. However, the Mariners quickly responded when Luke Raley drove in Ty France from second base in the bottom half of the inning.
Both runners advanced after Josh Rojas singled to right center and the ball passed Boston right fielder Wilyer Abreu. Then, second baseman Enmanuel Valdez received a hit from J.P. Crawford, and he threw home.
After Raley overcame the tag at the plate to tie the game, Rodriguez singled to right center off rookie Justin Slaten, bringing home Rojas for what would be his first walk-off hit in both the majors and minor leagues.
According to Rodriguez, “as baseball players, we always want to come through in that situation for the team and just kind of send it off.” “Being able to help the team in that particular situation and finally have my first one felt pretty good.”
Joely Rodriguez (0-1) lost, while Seattle’s Taylor Saucedo (1-0) emerged victorious. Up until the tenth, neither starter had a particularly productive game. Kutter Crawford of Boston struck out seven batters in six innings, retiring 14 consecutive hitters following a rocky opening inning.
Gilbert struck out eight in seven innings, giving up just one run and four hits. “Like they have the last few years, our pitching is giving us a chance, keeping us in there,” manager Scott Servais stated. “Leader Logan sets the tone early in the game and has had a fantastic start to the season tonight. Not much better than that.
Mitch Haniger’s first-inning single over J.P. Crawford gave Seattle the lead. Up until Ceddanne Rafaela’s double in the fifth inning and Reyes’ groundout, Gilbert held Boston scoreless.
Chris Martin, Greg Weissert, and Isaiah Campbell each tossed a scoreless inning for Boston, while Gabe Speier and Austin Voth of Seattle both pitched a scoreless inning of relief. Hitters for the Red Sox struck out 13 times, compared to 12 for Seattle.
The pitching staff that Boston is up against is among the finest in the major leagues, according to manager Alex Cora. However, they have had difficulties from us and are expected to score runs as well. Even though it’s a difficult one, we must prepare for tomorrow.
THE TRAINER’S ROOM
Boston Red Sox 3B Rafael Devers will probably return to the starting lineup on Sunday after missing his second straight game due to a strained left shoulder, according to manager Alex Cora. On Saturday the third, Reyes got the start.
Back spasms forced Mariners DH Mitch Garver to leave the lineup once more. Hopefully, Garver will return for Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox, according to manager Scott Servais.
