Gamecock Fans Unite in Celebration: A Parade and Pep Rally Honor the Women’s National Title Win
The parade was livestreamed by Live 5 News on their app and website, allowing fans who couldn’t attend in person to join in on the celebration. Even those with streaming apps like Roku, Amazon Fire, and AppleTV were able to watch the festivities unfold.
The event was attended by South Carolina coach Dawn Staley team members, elected officials, community members, and officials from the University of South Carolina. They were joined by Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann and members of the Columbia City Council The presence of USC women’s basketball alumnae added a special touch to the occasion.
As the parade made its way through the streets of Columbia, it was accompanied by music from the South Carolina band and cheers from enthusiastic cheerleaders. Cocky, South Carolina’s beloved mascot, also made an appearance, much to the delight of fans young and old.
Following the parade, a pep rally took place on the State House steps. Fans gathered eagerly to hear words of praise and appreciation from Coach Staley herself. Selected team members also took turns addressing the crowd, along with Mayor Rickenmann and USC Athletic Director Ray Tanner.
Coach Staley expressed her gratitude towards her loyal fanbase, known as “FAMS.” This group has been there for every step of the Gamecocks’ journey from an overlooked Southeastern Conference program to becoming three-time NCAA Tournament champions. Their unwavering support has been instrumental in their success.
South Carolina has consistently led college basketball in attendance numbers for ten consecutive years. This season was no different, as they drew an average crowd size of 16,067 fans per game—more than any other team in the country. Coach Staley never fails to acknowledge her passionate fanbase, which has stood by them through thick and thin.
The Gamecocks’ dominance is not limited only to their impressive attendance figures but extends to their home court as well. Having won their past 60 games at home, they boast an incredible record of 77-1 over five years when playing at home.
The celebration held in honor of this remarkable achievement showcased not only the triumphs of Coach Staley and her players but also highlighted what can be accomplished when a dedicated community comes together to support its team.
