Potential Replacements for Kevin Young, Coach of the Suns
Numerous candidates may consider the Suns to be a better option than another staff, and there are now several deserving candidates on the staff in addition to maybe college coaches.
The following candidates seem to make the most sense to us:
Kimani Young, associate head coach at UCONN
Young, who worked with head coach Dan Hurley as the primary recruiter and player development coach for two national titles, is regarded as a rising star in the collegiate ranks. Additionally, Young has received praise for grooming NBA players like Jordan Hawkins, James Bouknight, and soon-to-be Stephon Castle.
Moving a college coach straight into the NBA is always a dangerous notion, but Young’s resume speaks for itself, and after the season is over, he might be a steal.
Kenny Atkinson is the associate head coach of the Golden State Warriors. Since the Warriors’ 2021–2022 championship season, Atkinson has been at ease playing as Steve Kerr’s backup.
It is plausible, though, that Atkinson would read the writing on the wall in the Bay Area and try to find a way out. While Atkinson isn’t the most likely addition, it’s still important to keep an eye on him as the off-season approaches (whenever that happens).
Coaching advisor for the New Orleans Pelicans is Mike D’Antoni.
Without a doubt, this would be the most audacious hire. Legendary head coach D’Antoni hasn’t really sat on the bench in the NBA since the Brooklyn Nets’ 2020–21 campaign. As the next “offensive coordinator,” the former head coach of the Suns would be a perfect fit, but if Phoenix decides to express interest, it might just come down to mutual interest.
Suns assistant head coach David Fizdale
Among the staff, Fizdale would be the most “natural” promotion. Miles Simon and Quinton Crawford are two talented members of the crew. In addition, Fizdale has some head coaching experience, and the team seems to think highly of him.
Fizdale’s history as a defensive-minded tactician would be his biggest disadvantage, but with his leadership and prior experience, he would be a fantastic pick. While it’s never too early to spy out possible candidates, coach Vogel should hopefully not have to worry about making an official move until mid-June.
