Chris Paul Rumors: Warriors Point Guard Connected to Spurs Prior to NBA Free Agency in 2024
“A potential team to watch, should Paul and the Warriors part ways, is San Antonio,” Stein stated. “Among the early personnel rumbles in circulation: The Spurs could emerge as a Paul suitor if they decide to pursue some veteran know-how on a short-term contract basis to furnish presumptive Rookie of the Year winner Victor Wembanyama with more seasoned help in Year 2.”
Paul has a $30 million team option for the 2024–25 season; the Warriors have until June 28 to determine whether to exercise it or waive Paul. He will become a free agent if he gets waived.
The Warriors’ play-in tournament loss to the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday marked the dismal end to Paul’s 19th season in the league. After the game, he made it known that he will be back the next year for his 20th season.
Regarding his future, Paul stated, “That isn’t even in question,” according to Marc Spears of Andscape. “I just want to get back to playing.”
The question now is, where will Paul play in the upcoming season?
Despite largely coming off the bench, he scored 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game last season, making him an invaluable reserve for Golden State. In 2023–24, he had the highest assists total of any reserve player in the NBA. Participating in a youthful Spurs team would be advantageous to both sides. With only three players older than 25, Paul would add experienced knowledge to a club that would be very beneficial for a group hoping to start the Spurs dynasty a second time around.
Paul might get a boost of energy from playing with rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama in what will undoubtedly be one of his last seasons in the NBA. The 7’4″ Wembanyama would be very effective in a pick-and-roll-based approach, and Paul has probably the most pick-and-roll execution expertise of any player in the league.
Finding Wembanyama around the rim in San Antonio allowed Paul to relive one of his best seasons ever—throwing lobs to Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan for the Los Angeles Clippers.
