Lewis Hamilton’s seat was connected to a double world champion.
Spanish player and current squad have inked a “multi-year” contract.
Fernando Alonso inked a new “multi-year” contract with the British Formula One team, meaning he will stay with Aston Martin after this season. The 42-year-old double world champion Alonso has been associated with Red Bull and Mercedes as potential successors to Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, respectively.
The Spanish driver’s contract was set to expire at the end of the year, but Aston Martin confirmed on Thursday that he has agreed to an extension. In a press release from the company, Alonso stated, “I am here to stay.” The duration of the new agreement was not disclosed by the team.
“Securing Fernando’s long-term future with Aston Martin is fantastic news,” stated Mike Krack, the team principal. Over the past 18 months, our working relationship has grown significantly, and we both have a great desire to see this project through to completion.
“For the past few months, we have been in constant communication, and Fernando has been true to his word—he approached us first when he made the decision to keep racing. Fernando has demonstrated that he believes in us, and we reciprocate. Fernando is driven to succeed, driving more skillfully than before, more fit than before, and fully committed to turning Aston Martin into a formidable competitor.
“We will start our works power unit relationship with Honda in 2026 thanks to our multi-year deal with Fernando. Together, we look forward to making even more amazing experiences and experiencing more success.
This season, Alonso, who has won 32 Formula One races, will make history by being the first driver to compete in 400 Grand Prix. Red Bull, where Verstappen is rumored to be unhappy, and Mercedes, which is looking for a replacement for Hamilton, who is off to Ferrari, has been keeping tabs on Alonso’s next move.
But the ambitious owner of Aston Martin, Lawrence Stroll, is anxious to make the Silverstone-based team competitive, therefore the Spaniard will stay with the club for at least a third season.
Alonso won his second and final world championship in 2006, and he hasn’t won a race in over ten years. Even yet, he is still regarded as one of the F1 field’s stars, having assisted in turning Aston Martin from also-rans to leaders last year. In the drivers’ championship, he finished fourth and claimed eight podiums.
Alonso ranks seventh in the standings after the first four rounds of the current season, having achieved a season-best fifth place finish in Saudi Arabia.
