The Toronto Blue Jays have had one of their worst offensive starts in team history to begin a season.
Toronto was 1-for-10 in the seventh and ninth innings, and they also went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position against Kansas City. Their already dismal scoring average for the season dropped to 3.8 runs per game as a result.
According to StatsCentre, the Blue Jays have scored 95 runs through 25 games, which ties them for the sixth-fewest in team history. Interestingly, through 25 games, the 2022 Blue Jays had precisely 95 runs as well. Charlie Montoyo, the manager of Toronto, was sacked shortly before the All-Star break that season.
Even though the Blue Jays finished that season with a 92-70 record and an AL Wild Card berth, it required a significant midseason overhaul to get there. It is unclear if John Scheinder, the team’s temporary manager, will be able to maintain the positive momentum now that he is the permanent manager.
The five Blue Jays teams who, after 25 games, scored fewer runs than the 2024 team did not make the playoffs. Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., two of Toronto’s top talents, aren’t producing enough, which is a contributing factor in the team’s offensive problems. While the latter is hitting.231 with a.631 OPS, the former is hitting.219 with a.674 OPS.
Despite their combined five All-Star selections, neither of the young batters seems to be in a position to win this year’s voting in 2024.
Although they are only 0.5 games ahead of last place in the AL East, Toronto is still 13-12 on the season. The Blue Jays will host the 15-11 Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend after concluding their series with the 15-10 Royals on Thursday at 2:10 p.m. ET.
