RJ Davis Returns for a Fifth Season with the Tar Heels: A Boost for UNC Basketball
Davis himself took to Instagram to confirm his return, posting a highlight reel accompanied by two simple words and a light blue heart emoji: “I’m back.” This announcement marks the beginning of the White Plains, N.Y. native’s fifth season in Carolina blue.
Davis’ return is particularly significant given his performance last season. As the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year, he was the team’s leading scorer. He averaged 21.2 points per game on 43 percent shooting from the field and boasted one of the highest free throw percentages in the league at 87 percent. In addition to his scoring prowess, Davis also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists over UNC’s 37 games, playing nearly 35 minutes in each contest.
One of Davis’ standout performances last season was against Miami on Feb. 26, where he scored a career-high 42 points. In that game, he made 7 out of 11 three-pointers and shot 14-22 from the field overall. He also pulled down six rebounds and had four steals, contributing significantly to the Tar Heels’ 75-71 win at the Smith Center.
With Davis’ return, UNC will have both of its starting guards from last season. Elliot Cadeau is set for his sophomore season, and backup guard Seth Trimble, who was the Tar Heels’ most productive player off the bench last year, is also returning after briefly testing the transfer portal waters.
Davis’ decision to return for a fifth season is a testament to his commitment to the team and his love for the game. His presence on the court will undoubtedly bolster the Tar Heels’ performance in the upcoming season. Fans and teammates alike will be eagerly looking forward to seeing Davis back in action, sporting the Carolina blue.
