“We’re thrilled to have Mike guiding our teams,” said Bill Guerin, the general manager of Team USA for both the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Games. “He’s one of the top coaches in the sport, and his experience, particularly with international hockey, will help position our team for success.”
“Mike Sullivan is not only an outstanding coach but also deeply passionate about American hockey,” stated Pat Kelleher, USA Hockey’s Executive Director. “He’s a world-class leader and has been a vital part of hockey in our country for a long time.”
Sullivan, 56, has spent 11 seasons as an NHL head coach with the Boston Bruins and the Penguins, amassing 445 wins, 275 losses, 15 ties, and 100 overtime losses. He led the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cup victories in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to coach Team USA in these two major international events,” Sullivan said. “It’s been amazing to witness the growth of hockey in our country throughout my career. I am honored to lead our top players and eagerly anticipate the challenges ahead.”
The last time Team USA secured the men’s ice hockey gold medal at the Winter Olympics was in 1980 in Lake Placid, New York. NHL players have not participated in the Winter Games since 2014 in Sochi, Russia, but will return in 2026 in Italy.
Mike Sullivan’s appointment as the head coach of Team USA for these significant upcoming events is a testament to his exceptional coaching abilities and deep understanding of the game. He has been actively involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting hockey in the United States, working with youth programs, and participating in community outreach efforts. His dedication to nurturing young talent ensures a bright future for American hockey, and his role as the head coach of Team USA will further inspire aspiring players across the country.
The return of NHL players to the Winter Olympics in 2026 adds an extra layer of excitement and anticipation for the games in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo. Fans and players alike are eager to see top-tier talent from around the world compete on the Olympic stage once again. For Sullivan, this represents a unique challenge and an opportunity to showcase the best of American hockey. His experience with NHL players, combined with his international coaching experience, positions him well to navigate the complexities of assembling and leading a competitive team.
