Five are suspended by the MLB for participating in baseball gambling.
According to rumors that surfaced yesterday, Marcano might be permanently barred from placing bets on Pittsburgh Pirates games during his season as a player.
At the 2021 trade deadline, Marcano, who had initially signed with the Padres, was transferred to the Pirates as part of the deal that sent Adam Frazier to San Diego. Over the offseason, Marcano was claimed by the Padres off waivers. He has been out with an injury for the full season.
Pitcher Michael Kelly of the Oakland A’s, pitcher Andrew Saalfrank of the Arizona Diamondbacks, infielder Jose Rodriguez of the Philadelphia Phillies, and pitcher Jay Groome of the Padres were all suspended for a year.
If Saalfrank’s name seems familiar, it’s because he played in three World Series games against the Texas Rangers while on the Diamondbacks’ playoff team the previous season. He is now in the minor leagues and has only made a few major league appearances this season.
Groome was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2016 draft, 12th overall. He was sent to San Diego as part of the Eric Hosmer deal.Kelly, who posted a 2.59 ERA in 31.1 innings over 28 appearances this season, was grabbed off waivers by the A’s from the Cleveland Guardians this past offseason.
Throughout his career, Rodriguez made one major league appearance. According to the MLB, Marcano wagered on baseball 231 times, winning just 4.3% of those wagers. During his time on the squad, he wagered on the Pirates in 25 of those wagers. Evidently, Kelly wagered $99.22 on baseball, whereas Saalfrank wagered $445.87.
