Graham Leung, an attorney, has taken over as Fiji’s new AG, replacing Siromi Turaga.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka made an incredible decision. He acknowledged last week that he was misinformed after members of Parliament began increasing their own salaries, a move that sparked public outrage.
Graham Leung was introduced as the new Attorney-General on Wednesday in a ceremony held in Suva. He took the oath of office in front of President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.
Leung has over 30 years of legal expertise and has served as Fiji’s Electoral Commission chair and Secretary for Justice of Nauru. She has also worked as a lawyer and solicitor.
“Prior to that, Mr. Leung was Director of the Center for the Independence of Judges and Lawyers (CIJL) at the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in Switzerland,” according to a statement from the government.
“Leung began his career in the Attorney General’s Chambers in Suva as a state law officer, eventually working his way up to deputy solicitor general. Prior to going into private practice as a partner at a well-known Suva legal firm, he served as counselor and deputy PRUN at Fiji’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.
“Leung received his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) (Hons.) degree from the University of Adelaide, where he studied law. He also has an LL.M. from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Law, which is a Master of Laws degree.
“As a volunteer, Mr. Leung is a former director of Greenpeace Pacific and a former board member of the Fiji Rugby Union.”
