In the Top 14, Springbok Center dominates for an important hat-trick.
The former World Rugby U20 Championship winner signed with Top 14 team Montpellier after spending four seasons with the Bulls. Serfontein became one of the French team’s most important players after signing, and he helped them win both the EPCR Challenge Cup and the Top 14 championship.
At just 31 years old, the tireless Serfontein is still at the top of his game and is one of the players keeping Montpellier’s struggling team out of the relegation zone. Earlier in the season, Serfontein was linked to a return to the Bulls; however, it appears that his decision to sign an extension with Montpellier took the BKT URC team off guard.
Serfontein apparently has the option to extend by an additional season should he so choose, having signed on the dotted line for at least one more season. This would effectively put an end to any possibility of him going home in his prime, which might make a comeback to the Springbok lineup more difficult.
Serfontein is still in great shape despite this contract reversal, as he helped his team defeat Lyon 41โ26 in the most recent round of the Top 14. With three tries in the game, Serfontein made sure that Oyonnax, who finished last, would undoubtedly be demoted to the Pro D2 for the upcoming campaign.
