Kenny Lawler of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is out for six games due to an injury.
The Bombers will be without top receiver Kenny Lawler for an extended period of time, even though linebacker Adam Bighill looks to be making his season debut this week after spraining his calf during training camp.
After breaking his arm on a seemingly innocuous play during their season-opening loss to the Montreal Alouettes in the second quarter, Lawler was placed on the six-game disabled list.
During Monday’s practice, Lawler had a cast on his right arm; he is now their seventh player to play in six games.
“Those are always the tough ones,” Mike O’Shea, head coach of the Bombers, said to reporters on Monday. “You do realize that for a few weeks he won’t be able to do what he loves to do? He must carve out a new role for himself, and we must assist him in doing so and maintain his involvement, which is crucial.
“He will be taken care of by his teammates. He will be engaged, but it’s undeniable that being hurt is difficult.” During the first two days of the week, rookie receiver Keric Wheatfall has been practicing in Lawler’s position with the first string offense.
Despite being targeted twice, he did not have a single reception during the preseason and was placed on the practice squad for the first week of the regular season.
Buck Pierce, the offensive coordinator, stated, “He’s had a great camp.” “You know, making the transition from high school to the CFL and picking up the subtleties of the game is always quite the leap. However, he has extraordinary athletic talent, and you can see his confidence growing.”
Brady Oliveira, the running back, is still questionable after missing practice for the second day in a row due to a knee ailment. However, defensive back Redha Kramdi made a comeback to practice on Sunday following a hip injury.
The Ottawa RedBlacks, who had a bye in the first week of the season, will host the Bombers on Thursday in the nation’s capital as they look to win their first game of the season.
