Houston Astros’ GM reveals a top priority for potential trade deadline deals.
The Houston Astros, like every other MLB team, have been linked to a variety of prospective targets before the July trade deadline. While it is simple to associate a team with a player, the actual approach for the front office is usually very different. It is not always necessary to get the most gifted player available on the market.
When it comes to the Astros, there are obvious needs on the squad. They could use some beginning pitching and, if available, a first-base boost. Despite the demands and the availability of some players who may meet those needs immediately, Houston has a strategy in mind.
During a radio interview, Astros general manager Dana Brown stated that the team’s first priority is to make a trade deadline move. He wants to uncover players who will be a part of the future and have “several years of control” remaining on their contracts.
Right away, this news likely eliminates a handful of the prospective first base trade possibilities linked to Houston. Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, and Paul Goldschmidt are among the players whose contracts are ending. Following this news, it is highly unlikely that any of the three players are realistic trade targets.
It also limits what the Astros can do to enhance their pitching staff. However, it does imply that Houston may be prepared to pay a higher price to obtain players under contract for years to come. Expiring players are significantly cheaper to acquire.
All that being said, it will be intriguing to watch which way the Astros go ahead of the deadline. They have weaknesses, but with the correct moves, they may still push for a playoff spot. This piece of news certainly alters things, but there are still a few excellent players with future control who could make sense.
