After a South Africa Rugby break-in, burglars leave the World Cup trophy behind.
In video footage of the Monday break-in released on X by South African journalist Yusuf Abramjee, one of the robbers places his gloved hand on the trophy, elevating it slightly before moving to the cupboards beneath it.
The burglary occurred at the union’s hilltop office complex in Cape Town’s northern suburbs, but while police were initially concerned that the Webb Ellis Cup had been stolen, a South Africa Rugby Union spokesperson told the media that all of the union’s trophies are safe.
South Africa won the Rugby World Cup on October 28 after defeating New Zealand in Paris, becoming the first country to do so for the fourth time.
… there is a reason why people do not support the Guardian.
Right now, not everyone can afford to pay for news. That is why we prefer to publish our journalism for everybody to read. If this is you, please keep reading for free.
But if you can, here are three compelling reasons to support us today from Nigeria.
1. Our high-quality investigative journalism serves as a check on the rich and powerful, who are getting away with more and more.
2. Because we are independent and do not have a billionaire directing what we do, your money directly powers our reporting.
3. It is inexpensive and takes less time than reading this message.
