NFL Rumors: Colts’ Surgery Is “Not a Choice” Jonathan Taylor Owing to Type of Injury.
“The ligament tore off the base of the thumb and flipped on top of the tendon, sources say,” he said. “After that, there is no other way to prevent a loose tendon in the future except to undergo surgery to reposition the ligament beneath the tendon so it can continue to function. There was an urgent need for surgery.”
Taylor may miss three to five weeks, according to Rapoport, though the Colts may choose to shorten that duration given their refusal to place him on injured reserve. Had he been placed on injured reserve, he would have needed to miss at least four games.
The 24-year-old should be fit for the homestretch, if nothing else. If everything goes according to plan, he should be back in time for Indianapolis’ penultimate regular-season game against the Las Vegas Raiders on December 31.
Taylor’s campaign has been made more frustrating by the torn UCL in his thumb. After having off-season ankle surgery, he missed the first four weeks of the season due to physical incapacity. He has demonstrated glimpses of returning to his peak performance since returning to the field.
Although Taylor is on track to record career lows in both yards per carry and yards per game (59.1), another prolonged absence will be detrimental to his overall effectiveness. Zack Moss needs to keep performing well for Indianapolis to keep the team in the running for a wild-card berth.
