McCarthy might be ranked as the No. 3 quarterback or the No. 7 quarterback coming into April, depending on which NFL draft expert you choose to believe. That could propel him anywhere from the middle to late stages of the first round to any point in the first half of the second round.
However, McCarthy is a top-10 pick in the most recent ESPN mock draft, according to Matt Miller. Miller projects that the No. 7 overall pick, going to the Las Vegas Raiders for McCarthy.
In 2024, could the Raiders succeed under Aidan O’Connell? Yes, but even after signing Jimmy Garoppolo in the 2023 offseason, all indications currently suggest that they will start over at quarterback under a new regime.
McCarthy creates second-effort content outside of the pocket with ease and effectiveness. McCarthy’s Michigan scheme may not be helping him statistically, but NFL scouts keep telling me that McCarthy will be selected earlier than anticipated.
McCarthy is the only first-round caliber passer left on my board, with Shedeur Sanders of Colorado and Quinn Ewers of Texas anticipated to return to college for the 2024 campaign. And according to ESPN Stats & Information, if everything goes as planned, this would be the quickest four quarterbacks to be selected in the common draft era (since 1967).
Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels are all slated to go before McCarthy in Miller’s class, but it will be difficult for the junior to decline an NFL offer if he gets a top-10 grade.
Still, there are a lot of moving parts that will affect McCarthy’s choice. What is Michigan’s performance in this year’s CFP? What is Jim Harbaugh’s current situation, and does the NCAA punish anyone before McCarthy has to make a call?
McCarthy seems like a young man who would love to finish his time at Michigan with a championship, so if the Wolverines could accomplish that this year, he might consider it the appropriate moment. However, if Michigan loses, McCarthy might try one more time, take on the role of captain, and solidify his reputation as the greatest quarterback to ever play in Ann Arbor.
