With almost nine minutes remaining in the first half and the score tied 7โ7, one of the most severe of those occurred. During a second-and-26 play, Minnesota edge rusher Patrick Jones II was called for roughing the passer. As a result, the Lions were awarded an automatic first down at the Vikings’ 46-yard line.
The Lions would have been faced with third-and-21 if the flag had not been thrown. Instead, they scored a touchdown on a short field goal by Michael Badgley to give Detroit a 10-7 lead. They did this by using the free first down.
Jared Goff was going to pass when Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks struck him on that exact drive, the play before the field goal. Cam Bynum recovered the lost ball and raced it back for a defensive touchdown.
Replay authorities overturned the original call, ruling that Goff’s arm was moving forward for an incomplete pass, even though the game officials had declared it a fumble on the field. Although it was a closer call, the tape appears to show that Hicks made contact prior to Goff moving his arm forward.
As a result, the Lions’ lead grew by ten points.
Referees’ call of improper contact against Jaylin Williams in the fourth quarter, after Lions receiver Josh Reynolds seemed to bump him on his route, was another call that drew the ire of Vikings supporters.
With 4:21 left, this occurred on third-and-7, giving the Lions a fresh first down rather than 4th-and-7. This allowed the Lions to shave nearly two minutes off the clock by pushing the Vikings to take chances, which ultimately resulted in Mullens’ game-winning interception on the last drive.
