Manchester City is open to signing England star Kalvin Phillips on a loan with Newcastle, despite his limited Premier League minutes this season.
As previously reported, Juventus and the Citizens had begun negotiations on a January transfer for the England international. However, in a surprising development for the Phillips narrative, the former Leeds player may now plan to stay in the Premier League.
Following his move to the Etihad in a deal for up to £45 million, Phillips has failed to establish himself as a regular under Pep Guardiola. He played in just 12 Premier League games the previous season and has only made four appearances so far this season, his most recent being on November 4.
On the talkSPORT Breakfast show on Thursday morning, Jamie O’Hara and Dean Saunders discussed the player and their predictions for the teams he would play for.
“That’s a sought-after position, Man United signed Casemiro to play in that holding position,” stated former Liverpool striker Saunders.
“He might make it into Man United’s squad, but would he make it into Liverpool’s? Most likely. He’s better than [Wataru] Endo, in my opinion, when he plays every week.”
Then, O’Hara expressed his opinion, saying, “I think he deserves a chance again, I think it’s been harsh [treatment at City].”He was really good at Leeds, moved there, costing them a few pounds, and now appears utterly lost when he plays.
The former manager of Manchester City, Marcelo Bielsa, and Pep Guardiola used different strategies. “Because he knows he’s just never going to get in the side above Rodri, and now he [Guardiola] plays John Stones and Rico Lewis in front of him,” said Kalvin Phillips of Manchester City.
“Phillips will start for Newcastle and Tottenham, according to Saunders and O’Hara, although the former maintained the treble winner must accept a pay reduction in order to go on.
It’s obviously very tough to earn more money anywhere else, so he’ll be thinking, ‘I’ve got to take a wage reduction here to play football,'” he said. “You can only sit there for so long.”
“So it’s when you make that decision, ‘Do I leave and play football?’, or ‘Do I sit here on ridiculous wages?'”O’Hara concluded the Phillips transfer discussion by saying, “It’s as simple as you have to play football.”
