Alex Cobb understood it would be challenging to make an early May comeback to the San Francisco Giants’ rotation following offseason hip surgery. Even so, his ambitions were derailed by a flexor tendon strain and shoulder discomfort, which put him on the 60-day injured list effective March 25.
Cobb stated, “There’s some disappointment because I definitely worked really hard in the offseason to be back by now and it didn’t work out.” “When looking at the scenario as a whole, there is a negative component since we set those expectations early on. However, I had surgery on October 31 and would be overjoyed to be on this route if you told me. Overall, it’s a pretty positive viewpoint.
On May 27, Cobb is eligible to return from the injured list, giving the 36-year-old starter flexibility in how quickly he completes his recovery. The pressure to overcome the odds has vanished.
Cobb remarked, “It feels like you’re not supposed to come back.” “This mentality of “one day earlier, one day earlier” has always existed, but it’s no longer possible.
Cobb breezed through his spring training injury recovery work, pitching up to four innings in simulated games in Arizona, despite the initial projection that he would return sometime in the middle of the season. Cobb was supposed to go to a minor-league rehab assignment in San Jose in early April, but he was sidelined after feeling pain in his throwing elbow.
Cobb’s return was postponed earlier this week due to a mild case of shoulder soreness. Right-hand pitcher Mitch White, who was just designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, was acquired by the Giants on Saturday night in exchange for cash. Cobb was placed on the 60-day injured list to make room for White on the 40-man roster.
White is a native of the Bay Area and a graduate of Santa Clara University and Bellarmine College Prep. The Los Angeles Dodgers front office was led by Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi when the team selected White in the 2016 MLB Draft.
White, who is set to join the bullpen on Monday, has big-league experience as a reliever as well as a starter. This season, the 29-year-old made four appearances for the Blue Jays out of the bullpen, pitching up to 4 โ innings. It has not yet been decided what action to take in response to add him to the active roster.
Cobb might return on May 27, according to manager Bob Melvin, but it was a no-brainer to place him on the 60-day injured list.
Melvin stated, “There was a time when we weren’t going to do that.” “However, there has been a slowdown lately that has made it easier to do, Cobb reported that he has been throwing from ninety feet and that his shoulder “feels better and better” every day.
โHe stated, “A lot of it is just regular spring training that we ramped up really quickly, and the body will respond as it responds. “I’m thrilled with the advancements that have been achieved over the past week and a half. I can now take a step back and see a clear picture of how things will develop in the future. I feel like there’s something going on there. However, I’m not forced to push through it anymore.
