Andre Esterhuizen’s Journey: From Springboks to Harlequins and Back
Despite initial challenges, this move proved to be a turning point in his career. Esterhuizen played an instrumental role in leading Harlequins to their first Premiership title in 2021, even starting in the high-scoring final against the Exeter Chiefs.
His exceptional individual performance did not go unnoticed. In 2022, his peers in the Premiership honoured him with the Rugby Players’ Association Player of the Year award. Esterhuizen’s impressive form overseas also kept him in close association with the Springboks, playing a crucial role during their 2023 World Cup campaign.
In an interview with Planet Rugby, Esterhuizen was asked to name the best flyhalf he has played with. Surprisingly, he chose his Quins teammate and England star, Marcus Smith, over his fellow South Africans.
Esterhuizen praised Smith’s work ethic, his dedication to the game, and his ability to create opportunities out of nothing. He highlighted Smith’s level-headedness and constant desire to learn and improve, despite already being one of the world’s best.
Marcus Smith, born in the Philippines but representing England due to his heritage, began his professional career at Harlequins at a remarkably young age. He became the second-youngest Premiership debutant ever at just 18.
Smith’s potential was immediately recognised, and he made his official England debut in 2021. His attacking flair and impressive kicking skills quickly caught the attention of many, earning him a spot on the prestigious British & Irish Lions squad that same year.
In 2023, Smith featured in the Rugby World Cup for England, often playing in an unfamiliar position – fullback. Despite this, his adaptability was key in helping England reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Esterhuizen is soon set to return to South Africa after a season of mixed fortunes for the Sharks. The team is hopeful for better times ahead, especially with the confirmation of a few significant signings, including Esterhuizen.
Esterhuizen expressed his gratitude to Harlequins for the opportunity to return home to South Africa and be closer to his family. He acknowledged the club’s role in his development and career achievements and looked forward to his final few months at the club. As Esterhuizen prepares for his homecoming, he leaves behind a legacy at Harlequins, proving that once a Quin, always a Quin.
