Arrests were made following the robbery of the SA Rugby HQ following the World Cup win.
South African police have taken two suspects in for question in connection with the burglary at SA Rugby Union offices this week.
On Monday night, two individuals stormed into SARU House in Platteklo of Cape Town, and took Springboks memorabilia.
Two men break into the SA Rugby headquarters.
The two burglars stole Springbok shirts, whisky, and eight SARU laptops, as well as 60 laptops from another company, according to video footage of the break-in that went viral on social media.
Yusuf Abramjee, an anti-crime activist, published footage and photographs of the incident on the social networking platform X, formerly Twitter.
The two men are seen going around the offices, and one of them is seen handling a trophy, which has been proven to be a replica of the William Webb Ellis Cup, before rummaging inside a cabinet.
SARU stated that neither the real Webb Ellis Cup nor any other trophies had been taken, and SA Rugby director Rassie Erasmus even posted a photo of his dog Frank with rugby’s most cherished trophy. While the heist took place in the Western Cape, two suspects were apprehended in Gauteng.
“As part of the elaborate investigation that extends beyond the borders of the Western Cape, two suspects have been apprehended in Gauteng and are being questioned with a view to apprehending the perpetrators of the act,” police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa said, adding that detectives from the Serious Violent Crimes Unit had been hard at work following several leads.
“Once charged, the pair will make a court appearance in Cape Town.”
This comes less than a month after the Springboks won their fourth Rugby World Cup title, defeating New Zealand 12-11 in the final.
SARU House also has three other replicas of the William Webb Ellis Cup, as seen in a recent Springboks social media post. Captain Siya Kolisi was seen carrying the actual Cup to SARU’s headquarters and depositing it in the trophy cabinet.
