The Toronto Blue Jays and Justin Turner reach a $13 million, one-year agreement.
In his final season with the Boston Red Sox, the 39-year-old hit.276 with 23 home runs, 96 RBIs, and a.800 OPS. Nine seasons prior, the two-time All-Star was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the agreement, which was made public on Tuesday, Turner is eligible to receive $250,000 in roster bonuses and $1.25 million in performance awards. For plate appearances of 500, 525, 550, and 575, he would receive $125,000 each; for plate appearances of 600, 625, and 650, he would get $250,000 each. Along with that, he would receive $150,000 for 120 days of play and $100,000 for 150 days.
Including his $8.3 million salary, $1 million in performance bonuses, and $6.7 million buyout of the $13.4 million player option he turned down, he made $16 million from his contract with Boston last year.
Toronto, a team that had trouble scoring last season, has been keen to add offense. In the previous season, he made 41 infield appearances and 98 designated hitter appearances. Matt Chapman, a free agent, spent last season at third base for Toronto.
Turner shared the MVP honor for the 2017 NL Championship Series and won the 2020 World Series. In 15 seasons with the Baltimore (2009โ10), New York Mets (2010โ13), Dodgers (2014โ22), and Red Sox, he is a.288 career hitter with 187 home runs and 759 RBIs.
According to a news release from Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins, “Justin Turner has proven himself not only as an exceptional player on the field but also as an exemplary leader in the clubhouse.” “It is admirable that Justin has a history of delivering in crucial situations and that he consistently pursues victory.”
