Payton Henry, a catcher, has signed a minor league contract with the Blue Jays.
Following his return to the organization in 2023, the 26-year-old catcher was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 MLB draft. Henry had nine home runs in 255 plate appearances while batting.294/.341/.454 for their Triple-A team. His BB% was 4.7, and his K% was 23.1. Henry spent two major league seasons (2021 and 2022) with Miami, where he hit.186/.314/.209 in 51 plate appearances, 11.8 BB%, and 25.5 K%. He also had one extra base hit.
Henry has a powerful arm and a quick release, making him an excellent defensive catcher. In addition to his above-average blocking and receiving, his 2020 scouting report indicates that he may develop into a powerful hitter who plays defense.
Henry has a route to the major leagues, even though it may not have happened yet. Tyler Heinemann was selected by the New York Mets after the Blue Jays designated him for assignment.
