Braves DFA Yonny Chirinos; get Mets reliever off waivers.
The Braves transfer Yonny Chirinos to assignment in order to create space on their 40-man roster for a bullpen option. The former Mets right-hander Penn Murfee has been claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves, the team announced today.
The Seattle Mariners selected 29-year-old Murfee out of Santa Clara University in the 33rd round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Since making his Mariners debut in 2022, he has made 80 bullpen appearances, going 5-2 with a 2.70 ERA, while striking out 92 batters and walking 28 in 83.1 innings.
Due to elbow surgery in July, Murfee’s 2023 season came to an early stop, but he should be back in the lineup by the middle of 2024. On October 31st, New York selected Murfee off waivers; however, they were unable to accommodate him on their 40-man roster. As a result, Atlanta selected Murfee with the intention of obtaining more bullpen options in 2024.
Atlanta DFA’d Yonny Chirinos to create space for Murfee on the 40-man roster.
Chirinos, who was acquired by the Tampa Bay Rays in a minor trade last season, started five games for Atlanta and went 1-1 with a 9.27 ERA before being placed on the injured list due to a shoulder problem. The management was hopeful that Chirinos, who alternated between the bullpen and the starting rotation in 2019 and finished 9-5 with a 3.85 ERA, could return to his early career form with a totally healthy summer.
