Jon Rahm, who decamped to LIV Golf for $500 million, has admitted that “your feelings do change” in response to a significant financial offer, even if he had previously stated that no amount of money could alter his lifestyle.
When Rahm, 29, left the PGA Tour in December for a rumored $500 million, he became LIV Golf’s largest signing to date. The Spaniard’s prior remarks on the breakaway, in which he swore allegiance to the PGA Tour and asserted that no amount of money could change his life, were reversed by this action.
“Money is fantastic, but when [my wife] Kelley and I started talking about it, we were like, “Will getting $400 million affect our lifestyle?” Before the 2022 US Open, Rahm stated, “No, it won’t change at all.”
The current Masters champion talked candidly about the reasons behind his about-face after making his LIV debut in Mexico last week. In the most recent GOLF “Breakthrough” episode, Rahm stated, “I’d say there was two instances.”
“I believe there was a lot of division at that time, and dynamics started to change.” And certainly, there had to be more than just financial gain for me to want to change. Thus, when I made that statement [in June 2022], it was accurate and I meant it completely. Your feelings do change, though, when they hit you in the face with a big sum of money.
Although I try not to be materialistic, I do believe that I have a responsibility to do everything in my power to provide for my family, and having children has definitely changed that. I won’t lie; money is a factor in this. However, once more, you don’t quite comprehend what I meant when I said that.
Rahm acknowledged, though, that the truce between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf called through the June 6 framework agreement may not have been the only factor that led to his desertion.
Rahm continued, “That agreement between LIV and the PGA Tour opened the door a little bit.” I thought, “Well, we are definitely coming together,” when that occurred. I at least owe it to myself to find out what they have to give and what their vision is, since something is occurring. After the season ended, I decided to listen to them because I felt like I owed it to myself.
The winner of the Masters acknowledged that the ceasefire between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf also provided access.ย Rahm made his rebel circuit debut last week at El Camaleon in Mayakoba, Mexico, following his $500 million contract in December.
He sadly missed out on a playoff match with Sergio Garcia and eventual champion Joaquin Niemann after bogeying his final two holes.ย He captioned the picture of Legion XIII, League of Legends’ first expansion team, winning as a team, though, so that gave him some solace.
With their first-ever total of 24-under, Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, 19-year-old Caleb Surratt, and qualifier Kieran Vincent easily won the team championship.
Kieran Vincent, Tyrrell Hatton, and Caleb Surratt were on Rahm’s winning Legion XIII team.ย Speaking to the media prior to this week’s second LIV tournament of the season in Las Vegas, Rahm expressed remorse for missing out on several PGA Tour events even if he said he doesn’t regret switching sides.
At Las Vegas Country Club, the location of this week’s LIV Golf event, Rahm expressed his hope to return to playing some of those events in the near future to media. “I would definitely love to revisit and perform a few of them.”
I will accept an invitation to play if there is ever a chance to get back together. I would still love to sponsor some events since they hold personal meaning for me.
“Knowing that those events were taking place while staying at home and not competing was much more difficult,” he continued. “Those were difficult weeks, Torrey and Palm Springs.” I have repeatedly stated how essential Torrey is to me.
