Angel Reese creates WNBA history during the Chicago Sky’s Minnesota Lynx defeat.
Reese hit two free throws with 23 seconds remaining in the game to accomplish the milestone after grabbing 16 rebounds and needed two more points to record double-figures in both numbers once more.
Candace Parker, a former Sky player and two-time WNBA MVP, had the previous mark of nine games, which she broke. On June 20, in Chicago’s victory over the Dallas Wings, Reese made history by becoming the first rookie to record a double-double in seven consecutive games.
After being selected BET’s Sportswoman of the Year, it was the beginning of a day the 22-year-old would never forget.ย The Sky lost their game against the Lynx despite Reese’s efforts on the boards, bringing their season record down to 6-11. Making just four of her sixteen field goal tries, Reese had a difficult shooting day.
Teresa Weatherspoon, the head coach of Chicago, was careful to highlight Reese’s perseverance after the game and to emphasize the good things.
Her response to the reporters was, “Just proud of her, proud of what she does.” “The victory was more significant, I’m sure she’ll remark. It’s who she is, and she will keep doing what she does. She will always play with confidence and vigor, giving you everything she has.
“She is extremely self-assured and remains incredibly proud of her accomplishments and future plans.”ย The Sky’s offense utterly collapsed in the fourth quarter, scoring just five points as Minnesota pulled ahead, leaving them trailing by double digits after leading by ten points at one point.
With a season-high 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists in a low-scoring game, Kayla McBride led the Lynx, who are currently 14-4.Alanna Smith scored 11 points, while Napheesa Collier scored 13.
Reese, Lindsay Allen, and Marina Mabrey were the other Sky players with double digits points, while Chennedy Carter led the way for Chicago with fifteen. Weatherspoon’s team shot just 30.5% from the field in what was a difficult offensive performance.
