Kansas City Chiefs: The new backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes takes a strong stand against the team’s star
The #1 being someone as distinguished as Mahomes makes it an extra challenging task. Wentz has stated in a recent interview that he will make every effort to assist the Chiefs in pulling off an unprecedented three-peat.
Taking on the challenge, Wentz is
Wentz, who in April signed a one-year contract with Kansas City, told ESPN that he wants to encourage and assist Mahomes “anyway (he) can” both on and off the field. In his relatively brief NFL career, Mahomes has built a reputation as an outstanding leader and a nice colleague. However, the NFL season can be unpredictable, and the two signal-callers will occasionally need to rely on one another.
“We’re only in here a handful of hours every day and a couple days a week and it’s not quite the grind that it will be,” Wentz commented. Consequently, it will continue to change as I, in a sense, establish my niche. I will continue to look for ways to help, but Pat and I already have a wonderful relationship, and that will only get stronger.”
Wentz might learn more from Mahomes than the other way around. Mahomes is a two-time league MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion. Wentz is only under contract for a limited amount of time, and you never know when a different team might require a “bridge quarterback” to start a few games. Or, if Mahomes is hurt in 2024, Kansas City will need to find a replacement quarterback.
It is possible that Wentz’s career may be revitalized by working with a player as accomplished as Mahomes. “I’m trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can, formulate a relationship with all these guys and just keep getting better on the field,” Wentz commented. “You’ve got to always be ready to go when called upon.”
