Dan Campbell, head coach of the Detroit Lions, discussed the ‘difficult’ decision to release defensive lineman Bruce Irvin and Isaiah Buggs.
Buggs was a crucial contributor to the Lions’ 2022 defensive turnaround, notably in run defense. Irvin was signed late in the season, but he gave guidance and professionalism to one of the league’s youngest defenses, not to mention a handful of QB hits and a sack in the team’s triumph over the New Orleans Saints.
Coach Dan Campbell addressed both roster changes on Wednesday. First, a little statement on Buggs.
“When those things happen, nothing about it is easy, but it was the best thing for us and for him,” Campbell went on to say. “So I wish him the best of luck.”
The talk with Irvin appears to have been a little more convoluted, as the Lions considered their options—particularly given the roster moves that will be required to make place for both C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Alim McNeill, who are set to be activated from injured reserve this week. Furthermore, it appears that Irvin had a wish to move on, as seen by his tweet.
“We talked last week, we talked again yesterday had a long talk and so just at this moment, (we) couldn’t totally commit,” said Campbell. “And he’s got things going on as well.” So it’s difficult. It was just one of those things that wasn’t going to work out. But he’s a total stud. He certainly is.”
Campbell went out of his way to congratulate Irvin, mentioning how much of an influence he had in just seven weeks on the team.
“What a pro, Bruce.” He is. “Having him around has been a blessing,” Campbell added. “He just brings a completely different perspective.” He’s as professional as they come, even down to the way he conducts himself.”
