With the Toronto Blue Jays seemingly out, the Cubs could jump on top free agents.
But the front office hasn’t demonstrated that it’s ready to offer the high-paying long-term deals that the best free agents want. Because of this, the Cubs’ entire offseason has been dull as they prepare for Spring Training.
Chicago still has a chance to complete a deal that would distinguish them from other Major League teams as having one of the best free agency periods; however, this is probably only going to happen if the asking prices of these players start to plummet.
Perhaps that is beginning to take place.
It appears like the Toronto Blue Jays are done adding players this offseason, based on what general manager Ross Atkins said to Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic.
Significant additions would currently entail a certain amount of removal. We are pleased with our current crew. When questioned about the remaining free agents, he responded, “Feel good about the work that’s been done over the last five offseasons…
Significant news for the Cubs.
The Blue Jays were thought to be among the front-runners to re-sign Matt Chapman and acquire Cody Bellinger. Their agent, Scott Boras, has far less clout now that they appear to be out of the picture than he would have if there were other suitors.
Chicago’s roster would be entirely different and they would have a real opportunity to compete in the National League if they were to sign both of these stars. Their third base problem is solved by Chapman, who also adds another reliable offensive player. Bellinger provides them with a power bat and defensive versatility.
It’s probably a pipe dream to add both. Just one of these players would be useful to the Cubs. However, if the market for these free agents is really collapsing as Spring Training approaches, then perhaps obtaining both is not so crazy after all.
