The Texas Rangers’ top priority heading into spring training is
With three valuable veteran starters recovering from injuries at the beginning of the season, the Texas Rangers could use some more depth in the rotation. The Texas Rangers seem to be set in all areas with spring training starting in less than a month. That does not negate the fact that the reigning World Series winners have specific requirements or gaps to cover.
Josh Hader signed with the rival Houston Astros, costing the Rangers the finest reliever available. Naturally, one of Texas’s main concerns is still the back end of the bullpen. It might not be the largest, though. Before the 30 teams headed into spring training, MLB.com put together a list of possible enhancements. The Rangers’ submission was concentrated on starting pitching.
The Rangers will be able to add Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom, and newly signed Tyler Mahle to the rotation in the second half of 2024. However, it appears that there won’t be much experienced beginning pitching available before then. With Andrew Heaney, Dane Dunning, Jon Gray, and Cody Bradford behind him, Nathan Eovaldi is probably going to start on Opening Day. However, the Rangers could use one or two more senior starters who can chew innings while also providing extra insurance in case of an injury.
In this case, signing Jacob Montgomery is the logical solution. The left-hander reportedly wants to make a comeback after helping the Rangers win their first championship. Other free-agent options exist, and a trade might happen; Corbin Burnes and Dylan Cease are two players who are supposedly being pursued.
Prior to pitchers and catchers reporting on February 14, the Rangers are probably considering all of their possibilities.
