According to one insider, they do find another quarterback, but this time it’s a rookie who won the Heisman Trophy rather than a seasoned player. The Steelers have a few options this offseason to find a quarterback, including names like Justin Fields, according to CBS Sports’ Emory Hunt. If he had to guess, though, he would say they find competition for Pickett by selecting LSU’s Jayden Daniels in the NFL Draft.
“Before everyone hopped on board with what I said in the summer, Jayden Daniels would have been perfect for where the Steelers were going to pick,” Hunt explained. “That’s what was going to be my surprise first-round pick.”
Daniels, who played for three years at Arizona State before completing his collegiate career with the Tigers, defeated Marvin Harrison Jr. of Ohio State, Michael Penix of Washington, and Bo Nix of Oregon to win this year’s Heisman Trophy.
12,750 yards, 89 touchdowns, and just 20 interceptions were his career totals. In addition, he ran for 3,307 yards. Kirk Herbstreit, the draft expert for ESPN, predicted earlier in the season that Daniels would be the “steal of the draft.” If the Steelers choose to select him later in the first round, they hope that will be the case.
