At the pro day for the 2024 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers will have an intriguing veteran quarterback audition.
The San Francisco 49ers have given that chance to a number of veterans, including a quarterback who, just three years prior, had his draft dreams fulfilled. Kellen Mond, a 2021 Texas A&M product selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the third round, will make an attempt to join the Niners on Wednesday during their local pro day.
The 49ers will also check out tight ends Tommy Sweeney (Boston College), Hunter Kampmoyer (Oregon), and Curtis Hodges (Arizona State), according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. Hodges has not played in a game throughout his two seasons with the Washington Commanders. Over his three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, Kampmoyer has appeared in just one game.
Sweeney spent three seasons as a player for the Buffalo Bills after being selected in the seventh round in 2019. Due to difficulties from COVID-19 and a foot injury, he missed the whole 2020 season.
After being added to the non-football injury list, he spent time with the New York Giants last season but did not play. November saw Sweeney’s release. But the most fascinating old-timer present is Mond. Mond spent just over a year with the Cleveland Browns in an offensive akin to Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers playbook after abruptly fizzling out in Minnesota. Mond played for the Indianapolis Colts practice squad the previous season.
A solid audition for Mond might persuade the 49ers to add him to their roster for training camp, given his draft pedigree and past experience.
After Brock Purdy and Joshua Dobbs, Brandon Allen is San Francisco’s obvious number three quarterback. But a team that is all too familiar with the debilitating nature of quarterback injuries would find benefit in keeping Mond around for camp and preseason play.
Though it seems improbable that he would challenge Allen for the third-string position, the Niners could theoretically carry a fourth quarterback on the practice squad as additional insurance. In order to change the course of events, Mond needs to make an impression on Wednesday in Santa Clara. His presence will also add some extra spice to the proceedings at the 49er facility.
