After the Ohio State incident, Iowa women’s basketball was reminded of how the program’s reality has changed.
After a two-month ride on auto-pilot that saw the Hawkeyes tear off 15 straight wins, 12 of them by double digits, a run that’s held Iowa in the AP top five every week while reaching as high as No. 2 Sunday’s trip to No. 15 Ohio State was a rare stumbling block for this seasoned team. The majority of the flaws in Iowa’s 100-92 overtime defeat surfaced with time on the clock. Following that, an unexpected one appeared.
Together, they highlight how significantly the view of this program has changed in the previous year. The Hawkeyes (18-2, 7-1 Big Ten Conference) suddenly have strings tied to almost everything they accomplish. There is rarely any sympathy for instability at the top.
Speaking immediately after Sunday’s difficult defeat and her much-debated postgame collision with an Ohio State fan during the Buckeyes’ court-storming, Clark recognized that all of this “comes with the territory” as she walked off the field.
Throughout her spectacular ascent in fame and prestige, the Hawkeyes’ star has never shied away from the attention that comes with it. The fact that Clark used her media time essentially ignoring the problem other than calling it “disappointing” emphasizes her self-awareness.
While it is realistic for the Hawkeyes and Clark to anticipate a smooth transition from the court to the locker room regardless of the circumstances, the public’s split reaction to the scenario reinforces Iowa’s position from this season. When it comes to Clark’s accomplishments, overall manner, and sporting stature, the good discourse significantly surpasses the negative discussion, yet her celebrity profile remains at a level ripe for unjustified criticism. At the very least, it will not alter as long as Clark wears Iowa colors.
Neither will the aspects tied to anything in-game on Sunday. The Hawkeyes’ visit to Schottenstein Center marks their sixth straight genuine road game in front of a sellout crowd, and the same is expected for forthcoming trips to Northwestern, Maryland, Nebraska, Indiana, and Minnesota.
However, Ohio State became the first team to burn Iowa because to the improved environment Clark’s success helped create. While Iowa feels Sunday’s late lead should have held regardless of location, it’s far more difficult to see the Buckeyes overturning a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit on a neutral court or inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Navigating through intimidating crowds, metaphorically and practically, isn’t going away anytime soon.
“Every game in the Big Ten is a battle,” Clark remarked following his 45-point performance against Ohio State. “That’s what makes it so fun.”
Iowa, like Kansas State earlier this year, will get an opportunity to avenge its setback on Sunday in what was already shaping up to be a highly anticipated rematch with the Buckeyes. Before that March 3 confrontation, Iowa will have many additional critical road opportunities to display improvements based on Sunday’s experience. Next month’s trips to Maryland (Feb. 3), Nebraska (Feb. 11), and Indiana (Feb. 22), in particular, will have every external factor prepared to shock Iowa as much as possible.
Even for an experienced team that has gone through many tough basketball moments, weathering those exhausting road trips should put the Hawkeyes in a good position when Ohio State returns on senior day.
“I told the girls after the game in the locker room that we’re lucky enough that we get to play them again,” Clark told ESPN. “We’ll get another chance to play them, so don’t get too discouraged. Just had to answer.
“I don’t believe we were tenacious tonight.” I believe we were a touch sloppy in all areas. But we did create a 12-point lead, so there is still enough to be happy of. But there are many things to learn from.”
The Hawkeyes were always going to have to appropriately interpret Sunday’s conclusion, no matter what it was, considering that the season’s full intensity is still several weeks away. Iowa stays tied atop the Big Ten standings, with all elite goals still in play. Clark will remain at the top of the college basketball rankings until further notice.
