Springboks are to blame for Jake White’s admittance of sabotaging the Champions Cup.
For their round three road encounter against the Bristol Bears on Saturday, White selected an undermanned squad.
Springboks at rest.
Stars from the Rugby World Cup, including Kurt-Lee Arendse, Canan Moodie, Willie Le Roux, and Marco van Staden, were unable to attend the match; White gave his explanation.
“The intriguing aspect is that we have an eight-week mandatory break that we have to give our players,” he told TNT Sports before the game.
“And given that they had four weeks following the World Cup, the four or five weeks I was required to provide them were throughout the season. Nothing is amiss, as I stated while I was at home.
“I thought it made sense because we didn’t play on New Year’s Day or the weekend after, and we didn’t play the first weekend of January, so I assumed the five weeks probably extended into those five weeks, which means they missed these two games.”
When questioned if resting players is hurting the Bulls’ chances of winning the Champions Cup, the manager said candidly. It sounds like he will also be resting players for their home game against Bordeaux next week.
Yes, it does. Although the terrain in our nations differs, I would really like to play every Springbok every single week,” he continued.
The argument is intriguing and one I’ve heard several times in South Africa: a player like Handre Pollard returns to play for Leicester, but a player signed by our team must take time off. Thus, I wholeheartedly agree with those who believe that the top players ought to start every week.
White’s misgivings notwithstanding, the Bulls are eligible to compete in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup playoffs.
With a game in hand, they were sixth in the URC overall against the five teams above them going into the Champions Cup break.
Large-scale adjustments
The former Springbok coach stated that although it is not necessary, he is able to rest individuals individually and that it is his preference to do so.
“Some coaches are doing it at different times, and I’ve been reading between the lines.” Earlier in the week, he stated, “I could have easily given them their time off and kept Canan Moodie and say Kurt-Lee Arendse for these two games.”
“We all together, I’ve just concluded that it would be preferable to do it all and bring them back. It doesn’t minimize any of them.
As the Sharks or Stormers may approach things differently. They may choose to continue for five weeks, although that period may begin in March.
“When I looked at our players, Marcell (Coetzee) has to play; taking Marco (Van Staden) out right now won’t change anything since I gave Marcell some time to adjust to his three-week ban and lack of playing time, so it probably works for him.
“I would prefer to have Canan and Kurt-Lee together rather than one and not the other because I believe the two wings work well together.”
