In order to defeat the reigning champion, Daniil Medvedev, and advance to the Miami Open final, Jannik Sinner put on an incredible display.
In the Australian Open final, which was rematched, Medvedev led Sinner by two sets to love before Sinner rallied for his maiden grand slam victory. Sinner upset the outcome of last year’s final, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just 69 minutes. This was by no means quite as close.
Although the 22-year-old Italian has been outstanding in Florida, he lost his first match of the season two weeks ago to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells semifinals.
In the latter half of the second set, following two rash mistakes by the Russian, who was outplayed by his opponent, some Hard Rock Stadium patrons, including Serena Williams, taunted Medvedev.
Sinner remarked on Sky Sports, “I felt great on court today,” with the potential to pass Alcaraz as the world’s No. 2 if he wins the tournament. I did a great job serving, particularly at crucial times. I started each set out with a good handling of the issue. If he makes use of his break opportunities, things will change significantly.
I am overjoyed. I believe Daniil didn’t play at his best today; he missed a few shots that he typically makes, but I’m glad I took the risk and made it to the final.
