Liam Coen of Kentucky is believed to have been hired by the Buccaneers for an open job.
Coen and quarterback Baker Mayfield, with whom he collaborated in 2022, would probably reunite if that deal closes.
Prior to joining the Kentucky Wildcats as offensive coordinator in 2022, a role he also held in 2021, Coen was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.
In the year that Coen was with the Rams, Matt Stafford was injured late in the season, and Baker Mayfield took over in the last stretch of play. Coen was offensive coordinator during Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis’ time at Kentucky.
In addition to gaining a coach who is acquainted with Mayfield, the Bucs who sign Coen will also have someone who has experience working under Rams coach Sean McVay. NFL players that have adopted McVay’s offensive philosophy are already prevalent, and Coen is certain to follow in his footsteps.
Nonetheless, given that Mayfield stated on Thursday that he must know who is calling the plays in order to decide whether to remain in Tampa Bay, the Mayfield link may play a larger role.
